WITH THE MONMOUTHS ON THE WESTERN FRONT (WW2)

A scarce wartime account drawn from a series of articles by the South Wales Argus “Local War Correspondent,” written while the author was embedded with the 3rd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment. This lorry-borne battalion landed on D+8 and fought its way from Normandy through to the Low Countries. Living alongside the men in the battle zone, the correspondent recorded first-hand their actions, experiences, and daily life in modern warfare. The book includes detail on individual soldiers,particularly those awarded gallantry medals,along with portraits of several dozen men and numerous other members of the battalion mentioned throughout the narrative.

The Foreword explains that “To ascertain the part the lorry-borne Battalion of the Monmouthshire Regiment played in the invasion of the Continent [Doble] lived the life of the Monmouthshire men in the Battle Zone. He gained first-hand knowledge of their exploits & of their experiences. While at the battle front, he wrote a series of articles which were authentic in regard to achievements & were descriptive of the life of the soldier in modern warfare…”
