The 1st Lothians and Border Yeomanry, part of the 51st (Highland) Division, was deployed to France in 1940 to support the Maginot Line. During the German advance, it withdrew fighting toward Saint-Valery-en-Caux, where the division surrendered on 12 June. Personnel evacuated during Operation Aerial later re-formed the regiment, which returned on D-Day with the 79th Armoured Division and fought in North-West Europe until 1945 equipped with Sherman flail tanks.
