Bohemond of Taranto, Prince of Antioch and de facto leader of the First Crusade, was a figure of relentless ambition and tireless enterprise—“always seeking the impossible,” as Romuald of Salerno observed. Though he fell short in his bid for the Byzantine throne, he succeeded in establishing the most enduring of the crusader states. Remarkably, substantial studies of this extraordinary warrior are scarce, and none have appeared in English for over a century—making Georgios Theotokis’s new work particularly significant.
Theotokis foregrounds Bohemond as a soldier and strategist, tracing his role in the Crusades while giving particular weight to his campaigns across Italy, Sicily, the Balkans, and Anatolia.
