As a young officer in the British Army and the adjutant of his regiment, Harford volunteered for temporary special service as tensions mounted in 1878 between the British colonial government in Natal and the neighbouring, independent, Zulu kingdom which led to the Anglo-War of 1879. He first served as a Lieutenant in the Natal Native Contingent (he had spent much of his childhood in South Africa and spoke the Zulu language) and later during the war resumed his commission and adjutancy of his own regiment when his comrades arrived in Natal.
