After numerous expeditions to find, or ascertain the fate of, Sir John Franklin and the ships and crew that comprised his ill-fated search for the North West Passage, the British Government eventually gave up. Not so his feisty wife, Lady Jane Franklin, who commissioned Captain F L M’Clintock, a veteran of previous Arctic expeditions, to revisit her husband’s last known whereabouts and determine once and for all the fate that had befallen the members of his expedition.
Their mission, in a small refitted yacht, encompassing the travails of the voyage; meetings with the ‘Esquimaux’; and, finally, the solution to this great mystery, is described here in poignant detail.
