This major work of biographical reference was originally published in 1820. It lists the names of almost 2800 British Army Officers down to, and including, the rank of Major, together with their promotions; many entries include military and biographical details compiled from official papers and from facts supplied by the officers themselves. These biographies cover a most important period of military history – the last quarter of the eighteenth century and the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Selected despatches for many of the principal events of the period are also included. Our reprint of this title includes an alphabetical index to all five volumes, compiled by Norman Hurst, which will make looking up an officer a great deal easier. Previous reprints do not contain an alphabetical index and are not conductive to easy reference.
