An excellent narrative of the First Afghan War by an author who was Adjutant to the 40th Regiment which took part in the capture of Kandahar, Ghuznee and Kabul under Major General Nott. The author lost his campaign journal in the Khyber Pass to hostile Afghans, but has based this account on his letters home and his memory, and the diaries and recollections of brother officers. As well as the military events, there are descriptions of the ravages of Cholera and Small pox on the ‘Army of Afghanistan’.
