Germany did not have a heavy bomber when war broke out as the Luftwaffe thought that they would be able to manage with twin engine medium bombers to achieve its war aims.
The need for a larger aircraft soon became apparent and the lower priority He-177 became the contender for development and production. The aircraft was beset with problems from the outset and the need to have the aircraft of the drawing board and into the air without delay proved an impossible task. The book covers this process against the background of poor planning , a lack of clarity in a confused complex development process in a wartime situation and the unrealistic expectation that this aircraft could be delivered quickly being all things to all men. It is well laid out it is logical in its structure and complex issues are made understandable.
The operational history is well presented and tells it warts and all from its appearance as a transport aircraft in the desperate days of the effort to supply the 6th Army to its role as a bomber over the dangerous night skies of GB and its role as an anti shipping aircraft over the Atlantic.
