Detailed diaries from middle-ranking commanders in the Great War are rare, which make these all the more valuable. Alexander Johnston went from being a signals officer in August 1914 to in turn, Brigade Major, CO of the 10th Cheshire Regiment, and finally OC 126 Infantry Brigade. He fought at Mons, Le Cateau, the Aisne, the Somme and Messines. Within days of being promoted Brigadier General he was badly wounded.
