Lille was occupied by the Germans on 13th October 1914 and remained in their hands for the next four years; it was liberated by troops of the British Fifth Army on 17th October 1918. The first part of the book is an account of the occupation and liberation, this is followed by four guided tours of the town, starting from the Grande Place, each with its map. Finally there is a descriptive visit to Roubaix and Tourcoing, a round trip of sixteen miles.
