YANAGI: The Secret Underwater Trade between German & Japan 1942-1945
An intriguing and previously unknown aspect of the Second World War is thoroughly uncovered in this fascinating book - the secret undersea trade in war material carried out between the far-flung Axis allies Germany Japan and Italy. Exciting and fascinating naval history at its very best.
Author Mark Felton is a young historian who has uncovered a fascinating aspect of the Second World War previously all but unknown to an English-speaking public: the secret trade -= codenamed ‘Yanagi’ - in vital war material between the far-flung Axis allies Germany and Japan - and to a much lesser extent, Italy. As Allied air and sea power increased in the war’s latter stages, the trade in weapons - and even in jet and nuclear technology - was literally forced under the waves, and was carried out by Germany and Japan’s largest submarines. Felton has researched his subject thoroughly, and come up with complete accounts of missions by U-boat crews as well as reciprocal missions carried out by Japan, who even attempted ( fortunately unsuccessfully) to import complete Tiger tanks they had purchased in Germany. The difficult and dangerous trade required superb standards of discipline and seamanship from the submariners, and this book will appeal to anyone interested in undersea warfare as well as shedding new light on the Axis powers.
