XD OPERATIONS: Secret British Missions Denying Oil to the Nazis
First full revelation of a vital secret demolition operation to burn vast oil reserves along the coasts of Norway, Holland, Belgium and France and deny them to the invading Germans. A long-overdue tribute to the men who carried out a difficult and dangerous task on Churchill’s personal orders.
This book describes a vital series of operations carried out by British Royal Engineers at one of the war’s darkest moments : the destruction of thousands of tons of vital oil reserves in May 1940, as Hitler’s legions stormed across western Europe. This vital operation - personally ordered by Churchill - was entrusted to the Kent Fortress Royal Engineers, a Territorial Unit commanded by Clifford Brazier, whose posthumous account of the operation is here presented and edited by his son, P.H. Brazier. The demolition operations were vital to Britain’s survival - had the invading Germans got their hands on the oil reserves in conquered Norway, Holland, Belgium and France they could have even successfully carried out their projected invasion of Britain. Although those taking part were decorated, the full story was not revealed for years because of a security blackout but here the RE men who carried out this difficult and dangerous mission are given their full due.
