WITH THE BATTLE CRUISERS The Grand Fleet 1914-15

WITH THE BATTLE CRUISERS
The Grand Fleet 1914-15
The sole eyewitness account of the opening six months of the war at sea, covering Coronel, Heligoland and the Dogger Bank, as well as portraits of Admirals FIsher, Jellicoe and Beatty, this is a classic of naval warfare.
Filson Young, the author of this classic account - first published in 1921 - of the opening six months of the Great War at sea, had a ringside view of the fighting. As a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve he was present at many of the actions he describes; and as a man with connections in the Admiralty and Government he knew and produces powerful portraits of the Admirals who directed the naval war : ‘Jacky’ Fisher; John Jellicoe, and David Beatty. Young’s narrative covers the disastrous battle of Coronel, when an aged British squadron under Admiral Christopher Cradock was annihilated by Germany’s Admiral Von Spee off Chile ( a disaster later avenged by Admiral Sturdee in the battle of the Falkland Islands); the sinking of the Audacious, Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy; and the engagement at Heligoland Bight. Young was also an eyewitness at the battle of the Dogger Bank - the first great clash of the rival Dreadnoughts of the Grand Fleet and the High Seas Fleet. As the sole eyewitness account of the opening salvoes, Young’s book is of uncommon historical value, combining astute analysis of grand naval strategy with detailed and often humorous accounts of life at sea to offset the grimly exciting narratives of battle.
