WHITE DEATH: Russia’s War on Finland 1939-40
Much needed account of the ‘small war’ launched by Stalin’s Russia against Finland in the early months of the Second World War. The Finns held off their giant foe for longer than anyone thought possible and, argues the author, their resistance emboldened Hitler to take on the Soviets the following year.
A much-needed study of one of the 20th century’s neglected ‘small wars’. Journalist Robert Edwards examines the David v. Goliath contest triggered after Stalin launched the Red Army against his small northern neighbour only weeks after Hitler’s attack on Poland had triggered the Second World War. Global public opinion generally sided with the Finns, but were unable to offer material aid and the Finns were left to battle on alone. Much to the surprise of military experts, the Finns not only held off the Russians for months, but took the fight to their enemy in ingenious and determined ways. Although Russian weight of numbers and its command of the air made the eventual outcome of the war certain, the demonstration of the weaknesses in Soviet military might, argues the author, emboldened Hitler to launch his attack on Russia with such fatal consequences.
