WELLINGTON’S REGIMENTS: The Men and Their Battles 1808-1815
Wellington famously called them ‘the scum of the earth’ but elsewhere he admitted that he could go anywhere and do anything with the men with whom he won the Peninsular War and the battle of Waterloo. Ian Fletcher in this superbly illustrated account records the history of every regiment - infantry and cavalry - which fought under the Iron Duke between 1808 and 1815.
Distinguished military historian Ian Fletcher pays a well-deserved tribute to the men who the Duke of Wellington famously described as ‘the scum of the earth’ but elsewhere grudgingly admitted that he could take anywhere and do anything with. They were the salt, rather than the scum of the earth to whom he owed his many victories. Superbly and lavishly illustrated, this book presents a portrait of the armies that blazed their way across Iberia and into France in the Peninsula War, fighting a score of major battles and successfully storming three powerful fortresses. Culminating in the great and decisive campaign of Waterloo, this book also includes the service records of every infantry and cavalry regiment that fought under Wellington between 1808 and 1815; and is thus a comprehensive work of reference as well as a fine piece of narrative Napoleonic Wars history.
