WAR BOOK OF THE GERMAN GENERAL STAFF

WAR BOOK OF THE GERMAN GENERAL STAFF
A historically important document, this official guide to the laws of war was written for the German General Staff in 1902, but used by allied propagandists in the Great War to ‘prove’ how the Germans had fallen far short of the standards they had signed up to.
This historic book, translated in 1902, was the one used by the British and French Governments in the early years of the Great War as their guide to what the enemy were thinking and planning. The War Book covers the 1864 Geneva Convention, the 1899 Hague Conventions and other treaties that the German government had signed up to, designed to civilise the savage business of war. Its translator, John Morgan, a Professor of Law at University College, London was called upon by Allied propagandists to show how German conduct violated its own laws of war. The volume contains notes of the Germans’ own attitude to the laws of war, and Morgans footnotes criticising how they had failed to live up to the letter and spirit of the book. An important historical document.
