UNIFORMS OF THE GERMAN SOLDIER AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY FROM WORLD WAR II TO THE PRESENT DAY
Immensely authoritative and revealing visual record of one of the finest - if most notorious - fighting forces in the world: the German army from 1919 through the Third Reich to the contemporary Bundeswehr of today. Lavishly illustrated with over 450 colour and black and white photographs.
This lavishly illustrated study of the evolution of German Army uniforms - from the Weimar Republic’s Reichswehr to Hitler’s Wehrmacht and then to the modern Bundeswehr - boasts more than 400 black and white photos and over fifty in colour. It is remarkable in showing how the proud Prussian traditions of the German Army have survived in uniforms and insignia even into the contemporary - and largely pacific - German army of today. Tracing the history of the Army from the Reichswehr that arose from the defeat in the First World War, the study shows how the Nazis quickly made their mark on the Army in the form of symbolism such as the Swastika. More sweeping changes were recorded after the Bundeswehr arose from the ashes of a second defeat in 1945. This is an unparalleled visual record of an armed force which has seen more changes, more glory and more shame than any other army on the planet.
