Sudan 1896-1922

The vast tracts of the Sudan, one of Africas largest countries was a thorn in the side of the British Empire from the days when General Gordon was fatally besieged in the capital, Khartoum, to the day when London finally relinquished its attempt to control the country. At the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, the Sudan was the scene of some of the bitterest fighting in Britain's imperial history as Generals like Kitchener battled the followers of the Islamic leader known as the Mahdi. The Naval and Military Press has a full range of books on these cruel wars including the great battle of Omdurman, scene of the last mass cavalry charge in the history of warfare.
