This is the story of the climactic final battle in the epic struggle between Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Russia. ‘Operation Berlin’ was a two-pronged offensive designed to encircle and capture the Reich’s capital city. It was launched on 16th April by Soviet Marshals Zhukov and Koniev - bitter rivals for the honour of taking the Nazi citadel. Their target was the German Ninth Army of General Busse, which was pushed into the tiny ‘Spreewald pocket’ near the village of Halbe. Busse’s men suffered 40,000 dead and 60,000 captured before the Ninth Army’s remnants struggled through the artillery-strafed ruins of Halbe and escaped the converging Russian pincers. In this day by day account of the desperate final battle, Tony Le Tissier, a former British army officer and an expert on the battle for Berlin, talks to veterans of the slaughter on both sides who movingly recall their experiences as teenage soldiers in the collapsing ruins of the Reich.
