PATTON’S LAST BATTLE

PATTON’S LAST BATTLE
With pearl-handled revolvers on either hip, the cigar-chomping George C. Patton was the Second World War’s most famously flamboyant commander. In this account of his last campaign war veteran historian Charles Whiting follows him from the Battle of the Bulge into Germany and his final confrontations with the Germans - and his own commander, ‘Ike’ who sacked him just before he died in a road crash. An engrossing read.
The larger-than-life General George C. Patton was one of history’s greatest - if most controversial- commanders. A Great War veteran who - to say the least - did not suffer fools gladly - Patton led his beloved US Third Army from North Africa through France and into Germany. In this engrossing account of Patton’s last campaign, prolific military historian Charles Whiting - himself a veteran of the war - follows Patton’s last battle as he fought not only the Germans, but the senior Generals over him - Eisenhower and Bradley - whom he loathed as cautious mediocrities. Patton translated his dashing lifestyle on to the battlefield, leading his men from victory at Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge as the year 1945 opened, on a wild dash through Bavaria, birthplace of Nazism and Germany’s final bastion. Finally relieved of his command by the despised Ike as peace returned - though Patton wanted to contnue the war against the Russians - Patton was paralysed in a road traffic accident and died of his injuries. A sparkling book that - like its subject - pulls no punches.
