NOT ORDINARY MEN: The Story of the Battle of Kohima

NOT ORDINARY MEN: The Story of the Battle of Kohima
The story of Kohima - the outnumbered garrison of a Burmese hill station who held off 13,000 Japanese in April 1944 - and saved India. ‘For your tomorrows we gave our todays’.
Described by Lord Mountbatten as ‘One of the greatest battles in history ... naked, unparalleled heroism...the British/Indian Thermopylae’ the battle of Kohima was one of the great turning points of the Second World War. Arguably, the defence of Kohima, a hitherto obscure hill station and road junction in Burma, was the only untaken objective that barred Japan’s road into India and the final collapse of British power in Asia. Kohima was initially defended by a heroic handful - 266 men of the Assam Regiment and a few hundred sick and administrative troops. Reinforced in April 1944 by 440 men from the 4th Royal West Kent Regiment, already scarred by the savage Battle of Arakan, the Kohima garrison held off ferocious assaults by hardened 13,000 Japanese troops. In continuous pouring rain, and under fierce artillery bombardment, the men of Kohima kept the enemy at bay in hand-to-hand combat for sixteen vital days. This book is the story of the men of the 2nd Division who, as their memorial states: ‘For our tomorrows gave their todays’.
