North West Canada 1885
The rebellion led by Louis Riel, although ultimately suppressed, was caused by the continuing westward advance of settlers into the Indian lands in west and north-west Canada. Unrest amongst the Indians was channeled into a revolt by Riel. He set up a provisional government in the west and the Canadian Government mobilised the Militia to put down the rebellion. Apart from 16 British staff officers, all the troops were members of the Canadian forces. The fighting lasted for just one month (April-May 1885), after which the defeated rebels were rounded up. Riel was captured and hanged.
