NAPOLEON AND DOCTOR VERLING ON ST HELENA
NAPOLEON AND DOCTOR VERLING ON ST HELENA
A real historical find - the previously unpublished journal of the Irish doctor, James Verling, who witnessed Napoleon’s last exile on St Helena. A new view of the fallen Emperor and his circle, and their petty feuds with the British Governor, Sir Hudson Lowe, this is a must for all Bonaparte buffs.
This is a genuine historical rarity: the previously unpublished diary of one of the key residents of St Helena during Napoleon’s sad exile on the remote South Atlantic island. Dr James Verling was a young Irish medical man who witnessed the ex-Emperor’s enforced stay on St Helena, and his long-running feud - as petty as it was vicious - with the island’s British Governor, Sir Hudson Lowe. At one point, Verling was appointed personal physician to the ailing Bonaparte, but suspicions on both Napoleon’s and Lowe’s side scuppered the appointment. Nonetheless, Verling’s journal, along with a commentary and notes by its editor, the acknowledged Napoleonic authority J.David Markham, make this book a fascinating account of the final chapter in Napoleon’s tumultuous life, and a new view of the fallen Emperor and his decline from an astute and objective observer
