MUNRO LETTERS

MUNRO LETTERS
Letters home from India written by a young officer of the East India Company’s 71st Regiment. in the late 18th century. Their keen observation of the Indians’ own attitudes and behaviour make this a classic of colonial literature.
Letters home written by a young officer of the East India Company’s army. Munro’s correspondence reveals much of interest about the complex relationship between rulers and ruled in the early days of Britain’s Indian Raj. Munro has a special insight into the way that ostensibly defential Indian servants mocked and imitated their masters. He is guilelessly revealing about the mixture of fascination and repulsion he feels when confronted by the alien customs and behaviour of the Indians. The letters are equally revealing about the keen sense of homesickness the author feels at being stranded in a strange land. A rare volume of uniquely unguarded letters that will interest any fans of the early Raj.
