MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE GARTER. 650 YEARS

MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE GARTER. 650 YEARS
This is a magnificent work of art, a luxury product as befits its subject. In this history of the Order the authors concentrate on the foundation, statutes, records, procedures, ceremonies, personnel, robes and insignia rather than political and sociological and biographical aspects. Intended to commemorate the 650th anniversary of the first Garter Feast on St George’s Day, 23 April 1349, it contains a list of all those appointed to the Order between 1348 and 1998. The book breaks new ground in examining in some detail the personalities and skills of the individual artists and craftsmen who have been responsible for the production of the banners, crests and stall plates for St George’s Chapel. There is a chapter on the Statutes of the Order and a detailed survey of the Missions undertaken to confer the Order on foreign princes, which amplifies and supersedes the list published in the Complete Peerage in 1912 which was hitherto considered the most comprehensive record of these glamorous and diplomatically vital expeditions overseas. Nor are the fates of those who transgressed against the high standards of conduct required by the statutes overlooked - the Degradation of a Knight Companion. The order of service for the 1990 Investiture Ceremonial and the 1996 Procession and Installation are reproduced among the appendices. A truly splendid publication.
