KING CHARLES II
The life of the merry monarch who restored the Crown after the Civil Wars gets the full treatment from that doyen of Royal biographers Lady Antonia Fraser. An entertaining and absorbing account of an intriguing King.
Lady Antonia Fraser is the doyen of Britain’s Royal biographers. In this, one of her finest works, she describes the man who restored Britain’s monarchy after the dislocation of the Civil Wars. Unlike many rulers, the ‘Merry Monarch’ had a fascinatingly switch back life - from his childhood in pre-war luxury, through his teenage years as his inept father’s cause crumbled; and his own ill-starred attempt to regain the Crown at Worcester. Then followed his hairsbreadth escape from Cromwell’s pursuit after the battle, and the long-years of exile in France and Holland. Charles came into his own on his 30th birthday - the day the monarchy was finally restored in May 1660. His reign was just as dramatic as his early life had been, encompassing such events as the Plague, the Fire of London, the Popish Plot and two Anglo-Dutch wars. Charles was a wily monarch as well as a witty one, and managed to conceal both his Catholicism and his secret subsidies from Louis XIV’s France from his subjects. Lady Antonia also covers Charles’ personal life in entertaining detail - the many mistresses and bastard children who thronged his court. Altogether this book is a masterly account of one of the most colourful and significant rulers in English history.
