KILLER ELITE: The Inside Story of America’s Most Secret Special Operations Team

KILLER ELITE: The Inside Story of America’s Most Secret Special Operations Team
The inside story of the ultra-secret US special force known as The Activity - specialising in hostage rescue and assassination of terrorists.
This is the story of a special US force so secret that it has no name - or rather, it has many of them. Known simply as ‘the Activity’, it was set up in the wake of the disastrous attempt to rescue US hostages from revolutionary Iran in 1980; and hostage rescue has formed an important part of its operations since. Written by Sunday Times defence specialist Michael Smith, this account purports to be the inside story of ‘the Activity’s’ activities, in which disaster sometimes seem as frequent as success. The disasters included the failure to prevent the terrorist bombing of US Marines in Lebanon in 1983 which killed 241 men; and the notorious ‘Black Hawk Down catastrophe in Mogadishu. The Activity’s successes have included the rescue of US General James Dozier from the clutches of his kidnappers - Italy’s Red brigades - and (allegedly) the capture of fallen Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. But some of the Activity’s other triumphs, says Smith, are deniable operations which never make the headlines - including the killing of Al Qu’aeda terrorists and similar murky missions. Difficult to verify, this account lifts the lid on a shady outfit and tells us all that we are allowed to know about one of the most important units in the ongoing war on terror.
