JAGDGESCHWADER 53. A History of the “Pik As” Geschwader March 1937 - May 1942

JAGDGESCHWADER 53. A History of the “Pik As” Geschwader March 1937 - May 1942
53 Fighter Squadron, better known as the “Pik As” (Ace of Spades) Geschwader was one of the oldest German fighter squadrons of WW II with origins going back to 1937. This history, the first of a planned three-volume set and apearing here for the first time in English, covers the period from the forming of the squadron in the spring of 1937 to May 1942. The squadron saw action in the West in the “phoney war”, in the Blitzkrieg of May/June 1940 and in the Battle of Britain. In June 1941 it was moved East for the invasion of the USSR and after a few months on the Eastern Front it was withdrawn to Germany and at the end of 1941 it was sent to the Mediterranean Theatre where it took part in the North African campaign and finally assembled in Sicily for the assault on Malta.
