The start of this campaign was the siege of the fort at Chitral in 1895, the garrison were besieged by tribesmen for 7 weeks before being relieved by a substantial force. In July 1897 a rising began against the British on the North West Frontier which lasted for nearly a year and involved virtually every tribe in the area .The difficult nature of the terrain and the fanatical disposition of the enemy made the 1897-98 campaign particularly hard and casualties amongst British and Indian troops were quite high.
