Most of us associate the U-boat wolf packs of the Second World War with the Battle of the Atlantic. This book shows that the U-boats’ reach extended far beyond that. It focuses on the campaigns - carried out in close co-operation with Germany’s Japanese ally - waged by the U-boats in the Indian Ocean. Nearly 40 U-boats operated in these watersd, serving alongside the Japanese troops occupying Malaya. This joint action even took the U-boats into the Pacific, where they attacked shipping off the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. But as the war continued, co-operation between the Axis allies often broke down, especially after Italian supply submarines were added to the combustible mix. This is the first study of this forgotten campaign and is generously illustrated by more than 100 previously unpublished photographs.
