Jordan’s book also starkly portrays the feuds and fissures opened up in British society by the debate over slavery. He examines the real condition of slaves in Africa, on their trans-Atlantic voyage, and in the Americas; and looks at the propaganda used by abolitionists and their opponents to get their views across to a largely indifferent British public.
