Dramatically rescued and restored to power in the north of the country by his German protectors, the once dominant Duce was a shadow of his former self as he passively awaited his fate. Historian Philip Morgan’s account of the last days of Mussolini’\s regime is detailed and academic, yet a very lively read. As well as the high politics, Morgan shows how ordinary Italians became distanced from fascist rule by the wars that their dictator had so unwisely launched. It is also a story of how Italy suffered two invasions - from the Allies in the south and the Germans in the north - and how the traumatic experience of occupation and liberation moulded post-war Italian society.
