East And West Africa 1887-1900

There were various operations, mainly punitive expeditions against tribes people, on or near the coasts of Africa. Due to the very difficult nature of the terrain, the Royal Navy were the mainstay of British power, operating easily on the coasts and sailing up rivers into the interior. Sometimes a small naval brigade was landed to storm the local stronghold or tribal capital. Indian troops, who were employed in several expeditions in East Africa, and the West India Regiment were employed in the very difficult operations in West Africa. Very few British army personnel were involved, almost entirely officers and NCO instructors attached to local forces.
