CONFLICT IN THE CRIMEA British Redcoats on Russian Soil
A soldiers’ eye view of the Crimean War - the mid-Victorian conflict that killed half a million soldiers, many of whom died thanks to their own commanders’ bungling.
The Crimean War - known to us today for the Charge of the `Light Brigade and the nursing work of Florence Nightingale - was in fact a long and gruelling struggle that killed half a million soldiers. This is a full account of the war, covering its causes, course and resolution. Included are the setpiece battles of the Alma, Inkerman and Balaclava - and the long and arduous siege of the fortress port of Sebastopol that finally brought the war to a close. D.S. Richards makes extensive use of diaries and letters of combatants, and this is very much a soldiers eye view of the war and its hardships in which disease and freezing temperatures were as lethal an enemy as the Russians. Conflict In the Crimea strips away any vestige of Victorian romanticism from a conflict in which while the reputation of the commanders may be tarnished, the courage and endurance of the ordinary soldier is not.
