China 1840-42

The war was caused by the insistence of British merchants that they should have a monopoly over opium imports from India. Attacks began on British nationals and their property, and in August 1839 the British seized Hong Kong. A protracted war followed, and after various naval and land engagements the Chinese sued for peace, which lasted until 1857.
