CAWNPORE AND LUCKNOW A Tale of Two Sieges: Indian Mutiny

CAWNPORE AND LUCKNOW
A Tale of Two Sieges: Indian Mutiny

RRP: £19.99
OUR PRICE: £6.95

The full horrific and heroic story of the two sieges - Cawnpore and Lucknow, one ending in massacre, the other in relief, - which together embody the whole tragedy of the 1857 Indian Mutiny
The towns of Cawnpore and Lucknow are the two places most tragically associated with the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Both were the sites of sieges, one ending in betrayal and a bloody massacre; the other in two heroic reliefs. At Cawnpore a small garrison of 240 British troops guarded a large number of 375 women and children, holding off 3,000 besieging rebels led by the local ruler Nana Sahib. After heat, mounting casualties and dwindling water took their toll of the besieged, a truce was agreed under which the garrison would be allowed to leave by river. The deal was treacherously betrayed and most of the survivors - including the civilians- were massacred. When the British retook Cawnpore they took a terrible vengeance on the mutineers. At Lucknow, a similar mix of 1800 British soldiers and civilians and 1,000 loyal Indian sepoys took refuge in the Residency buildings and withstood another prolonged siege by 20,000 mutineers. Despite the death of the commander, Henry Lawrence, who was cut in two by a shell, the garrison held out in terrible conditions until relieved by a column under Sir Colin Campbell who evacuated the civilians in November 1857. But the siege was renewed and Lucknow was only finally relieved by a force led by Generals Havelock and Outram in March 1858. This riveting history tells the full story of the twin sieges, embodying as they do both the horror and the heroism of the Indian Mutiny.
