CAMPAIGNING FOR NAPOLEON The Diary of a Napoleonic Cavalry Officer 1806-1813

CAMPAIGNING FOR NAPOLEON
The Diary of a Napoleonic Cavalry Officer 1806-1813
Vivid and moving diary of one of Napoleon’s cavalry officers, recording his gradual disillusionment from the triumph at Jena in 1806 to disaster in the Russian snows in 1812/13.
This is a personal memoir of the Napoleonic Wars by a French cavalry officer who was in at the sharp end of most of Bonaparte’s campaigns and battles. A distant cousin of Napoleon’s first wife, the Empress Josephine, Maurice de Tascher was motivated by burning patriotism and admiration for the Emperor when he joined the Grande Armee in 1806. He subsequently saw service against the Prussians at Jena, the Spanish and British in the Peninsular War, the Austrians at Aspern-Essling; and the culminating disaster of the invasion of Russia in 1812. Throughout all the fighting De Tascher kept a diary which is a vivid record of his experiences, observations and personal feelings. The journal records his gradual disillusionment under the impact of the many deaths, wounds and hardships that he experienced and witnessed. By the time he died of disease in Berlin in 1813, De Tascher was a worn-out warrior who had seen the worst that continuous warfare can do
