Set in the frustrating year of 1915, these are the Great War diaries of Gerald Achilles Burgoyne an officer of the Royal Irish Rifles, which he wrote in a notebook and sent home to his wife. The first entry was written in November 1914, and the diary concludes abruptly in May 1915 when Burgoyne was wounded in an attack on Hill 60 near Ypres. The pervading conditions in these early months of trench warfare were those of cold, ice wind and wet and Burgoyne writes unsparingly of the raw fighting and the courage of the men under his command. These vivid diaries, found by his daughter in a trunk after Burgoyne died during an air raid in Italy’s attack on Abyssinia ( modern Ethiopia) in 1936, are a key account of early trench warfare, superbly illustrated by the author’s own drawings.
