BLITZKRIEG IN THEIR OWN WORDS: First-hand Accounts From German Soldiers 1939-1940

BLITZKRIEG IN THEIR OWN WORDS: First-hand Accounts From German Soldiers 1939-1940
First English translation of a wartime collection of first-hand accounts of the Nazi Blitzkrieg campaigns that destroyed Poland and France. Full of bombast and arrogant propaganda - yet has all the authentic brutal excitement of war
The Nazi campaigns of conquest in Poland in 1939, and through France and the Low Countries in 1940 were the high points of German military success - and brought a new word ‘Blitzkrieg’ into the military vocabulary. In this wartime collection of first-hand accounts by young veterans of the campaign - with a foreword by General Heinz Guderian, the commander most associated with the Blitzkrieg concept - we hear from the horse’s mouth how it felt to be at the spearhead. Bluntly expressed, yet thrilling and exciting, this is an arrogantly propagandist book. (It was first published under the Third Reich in 1942 and has not previously been translated into English). Yet it is of great value to military historians for all its bombast. Recording the complete destruction of the Polish and French armies in a language of brutal enthusiasm, it is ironic to reflect that many of these young warriors would soon be lying dead on the endless Russian steppes - victims of the lust for war and conquest they so eagerly embrace here.
