At last, the most famous and arguably the greatest of the Great War epics, for so long kept under wraps by the BBC, is now available to the general public.Released in both video tape and DVD format, it truly is an epic production, for the viewing time is over seventeen hours! Originally broadcast in twenty-six episodes by the BBC in 1964, with the services of a brilliant generation of Great War hisorians including John Terraine and Correlli Barnett, it featured not only the historical aspect of the war but also included interviews with many veterans - all comparatively young at the time.As a historical record it set a benchmark that would be almost impossible to beat today.Anyway, there is really no requirement, for it was crafted by a superb team of brilliant military historians from the choicest original film stock available from over 40 archives in 20 countries. It remains a classic and timeless item that should surely grace the collection of any Great War enthusiast. The several volumes cover so very many aspects of the War from its inception to the bitter end that it is difficult to choose which to mention.A booklet containing the original viewing notes, which acompanies the DVD set itself reads like a history of the War.The major battles and fighting on the Western Front are naturally well covered, as is the life of the Tommy struggling to survive in the trenches. The war at sea and in the air are fully feat}red, as are the other theatres including Gallipoli, Italy and Russia. The films graphically illustrate facets such as recruitment, armaments manufacture, air raids, women at war, rationing and submarines.Indeed so much is there it just has to be seen to be believed. The vital parts played by our allies are of course included. The picture quality really is superb. The DVD set also includes another disc containing additional footage of interviews with veterans and also a training film.
