BATTLEGROUND EUROPE. RIQUEVAL
Riqueval was the scene of one of the great British victories of WWI during those last hundred days when the armies of the BEF advanced to final victory over what had been the most formidable army in Europe. This is a period ignored by the great British media, intellectuals and playwrites to whom the Great War means Somme and Passchendaele - anything else is an irrelevant distraction. The area covered in this book is, therefore, less widely known and visited. There is less physical evidence of the battles fought here since the war, by this time, was one of movement compared to the fighting in previous years. Nevertheless this excellent addition to the Battleground Europe series has much to tell - of disaster (March 1918) and of triumph (September 1918). The author leads the visitor along this sector of the front, explaining the battles with clear maps followed by clear instructions of routes to take and places to visit. In all eight actions are described, each with its tour map, and there is a final chapter on the cemeteries in the area.
