BATTLEGROUND EUROPE: SOMME COMBLES

BATTLEGROUND EUROPE: SOMME COMBLES
Description and tour of the battlefield area around Combles and the fighting which led to its capture in September 1916 by 56th (London) Division.
One of the Battleground Europe series. Combles is, perhaps, one of the places less frequented by visitors to the Somme battlefields. When the offensive opened on 1st July Combles lay well behind the German second line on the extreme right flank of Fourth Army and it wasn’t until September 1916 that the fighting reached it when it was captured by 56th (London) Division. Features that came into prominence in connection with the fighting were Falfemont Farm, Leuze (‘Lousy’) Wood and Bouleaux Wood. A popular memorial for visitors in the area, near Leuze Wood, is a cross commemorating Major Cedric Dickens, grandson of the author, who was killed near the spot where the cross stands. Besides giving a graphic account of the fighting the author has provided as a lead-in a very useful outline explanation of what was the largest regiment in the British Army, the London Regiment which made up the bulk of the infantry of the 56th Division. The guided tours by car and on foot take in cemeteries and memorials connected with the battle.
