BATTLEGROUND EUROPE CALAIS: A Fight to the Finish - May 1940

BATTLEGROUND EUROPE CALAIS: A Fight to the Finish - May 1940
Moving reconstruction of the hopeless but heroic battle of Calais in May 1940 in which 30 Brigade took on an entire German armoured division - with no prospect of escape or evacuation.
The battle of Calais in May 1940 has long been overshadowed by other struggles in the fall of France - notably the evacuation of Dunkirk. Nevertheless, as this careful and complete account of the campaign shows, Calais was an important delaying action in which the encircled men of 30 Brigade fought doggedly until the end - despite knowing that they were only one mechanised brigade up against the might of a fully equipped German armoured division, and with no prospect of evacuation for them. Author Jon Cooksey, from initially scanty records - the War Diary of the 2nd KIngs’ Royal Rifle Corps covering Calais consists of just six lines recording baldly that the battalion had suffered ‘100 percent casualties’ - has movingly reconstructed this hopeless but heroic battle. He has done so largely from the memories of survivors who were marched off to five years of captivity after the action. This is a moving and meticulous reminder to the thousands of Cross-Channel trippers who rush through it each year, that Calais is more than a place to buy cheap booze.
