A companion piece to Jon Cooksey’s study of the heroic but doomed defence of Calais in May 1940, this account of the battle for Calais’s sister port of Boulogne is just as exciting and authoritative. The outnumbered 20 Guards Brigade were up against a formidible opponent in the shape of Heinz Guderian’s XIX Panzerkorps which drove in the over-stretched defence. The last stage of the battle - house to house street fighting - is well described but the outcome of the battle was ordained and inevitable. Although more men escaped from Boulogne than got away from neighbouring Calais, both ports were sacrificed to cover the escape of the majority of the BEF from Dunkirk. This book should provide a good reason to tarry in Boulogne for the millions of British visitors who whizz through the port today in the search for cheap booze. It once meant much more than that.
