Battleground America: Marye’s Heights, Fredericksburg

Battleground America: Marye’s Heights, Fredericksburg
Focuses on Marye’s Heights: the most hotly contested sector of the battle of Fredericksburg, the most bloody northern defeat in the American Civil War.
Fredericksburg in September 1862 was the most bloody and complete defeat of a Union army during the American CIvil War. The newly appointed ( and soon to be sacked) Northern Commander, Gen. Ambrose Burnside - (better known for the invention of the facial hair named after his whiskers [‘sideburns’] than for his military prowess) - launched his army in Somme-style extended waves up the slopes in full frontal attacks on a strongly defended Confederate position. Not surprisingly, despite the gallantry with which the Northern forces pressed home their assualt, General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia took a terrible toll. The focus of this book concentrates on Marye’s Heights, the sectolr held by General Longstreet’s troops, which is today preserved as a National Park for the fallen.
