BATTLE ZONE NORMANDY: BATTLE FOR CHERBOURG

BATTLE ZONE NORMANDY: BATTLE FOR CHERBOURG
An account of the capture of the port of Cherbourg - a key allied objective in the Normandy campaign. Expert text, and many maps and photographs.
The port of Cherbourg, at the tip of Normandy’s Cotentin peninsular, was vital to the success of the D-Day campaign. The Allies had to capture a major port in order to bring in the troops and supplies vital to expanding the beachheads won on June 6th. This book describes how Cherbourg was seized and held by the troops of VII Corps under Maj.Gen. J.Lawton ‘Lighting Joe’ Collins. Cherbourg, with a 40,000 strong German garrison dug in behind concrete bunkers on commanding hills, was a very tough nut to crack. The three U.S. divisions began their assault on June 22nd, supported by air attacks and naval bombardments. It took almost a week of fierce fighting before the Germans surrendered. But their capitulation only came after they had destroyed the port’s facilities, rendering them unusable for months to come. The author of this account of Cherbourg’s capture, R.P.W.Havers, is a lecturer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and his expert account is backed by the Battle Zone Normandy series’ usual excellent accompanying apparatus of maps, photographs and easy-to-follow battlefield tours.
