Ashantee 1873-74

The campaign against King Kalkali in the west African Ashantee [or Ashanti] kingdom can be divided into two phases, the first taking place before the arrival of General Sir Garnet Wolseley and the main British force. During this phase operations were undertaken by a small naval brigade (June and July 1873), the town of Chamah being shelled. After Wolseley arrived the second phase - the steady advance inland towards Kumassi - was begun. Several major actions were fought, and the nature of the terrain and the determined Ashanti resistance made the campaign most difficult. In February 1874, the force entered Kumassi and Kalkali agreed to make peace.
