ADMIRAL OF THE BLUE: The Life and Times of Admiral John Child Purvis 1747-1825

ADMIRAL OF THE BLUE: The Life and Times of Admiral John Child Purvis 1747-1825
Superb naval biography of the Admiral who was the first British officer to go head to head with Napoleon, then served as second-in-command of the Mediterranean fleet in the age of St Vincent, Collingwood and Nelson.
Admiral John Child Purvis was one of that brilliant breed of British sailors whose star was Horatio Nelson himself. Purvis won his spurs during a bloody duel between his own sloop and a French corvette in the War of American Independence. Later, commanding a battleship, he became the first British officer to confront the young Artillery General Napoleon Bonaparte at the siege of Toulon. As Captain of the ‘Princess Royal’ and later the ‘London’ he roamed the Mediterranean, serving as Second-in-Command to Sir John Jervis ( Lord St VIncent) and Lord Collingwood. His career was crowned when he saved the Spanish fleet at Cadiz from capture by the French. A masterpiece of colourful writing and detailed research, this is a naval biography in the finest tradition which will be enjoyed by all who relish the Royal Navy’s finest hour .
