XENOPHON AND THE ART OF COMMAND

XENOPHON AND THE ART OF COMMAND
Xenophon (c.430-354 BC) was not only one of the great commanders of the ancient world - he was also one of its great historians, not least of his own campaigns. Godfrey Hutchinson’s study portrays both aspects of this great Greek who continued Thucydides’ history of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta down to the defeat of Athens, followed by the fall of Sparta and the rise of Thebes to the leadership of the Hellenic world. One of Socrates’ most gifted pupils and a contemporary of Plato and Alcibiades, Xenophon, disillusioned with Athenian politics, joined Kyros’s attempt to take the throne of Persia. Stranded in the Persian interior after Kyros’s betrayal and death he famously led his men to the sea and safety before serving under the Spartan king Agesilaos and writing his histories Anabasis and Hellenika while in Spartan exile. Hutchinson’s study examines Xenophon’s writings on warfare, and explores such issues as training, comradeship, battle tactics, intelligence and espionage in his histories.
