West Country Regiments on the Somme
Redresses the balance given to northern ‘Pals’ battalions on the Somme with an account of the Dorset and Devonshire regiments in the battle.‘The Devonshires held this trench. The Devonshires hold it still’. Moving & memorable.
This book attempts to do for the West Country regiments what other historians have done in recent years for the northern Pals’ battalions on the Somme. Tim Saunders movingly narrates the achievements and losses of the Regular and Serrvice battalions of the Dorset and Devonshire regiments both on the terrible July 1st 1916 and in the subsequent months of the battle. Often using the words of the men themselves, Saunders tells the stories behind such cemeteries as Devonshire trench with its classic inscription: ‘The Devonshires held this trench. The Devonshires hold it still’.
